Farmers & Landowners

With carbon farming and agroforestry, you optimize the ecological and financial health of your farm. We can help.

Farmers, foresters, and other land managers have different needs, and within the context of US agriculture, it can be risky and expensive to adopt carbon farming practices.

You understand the importance of conservation practices to your farm’s health, your bottom line, and the health of the planet, but you can’t shoulder climate drawdown on your own.

Carbon Harvest will meet you where you are and help you identify opportunities for profitable perennials-based systems on your land.

Then, we will work with the community that depends on our farms and working lands so that the recommended carbon farming practices for your land base can be funded and implemented.

As we do this work, we will collectively build the emerging markets that reward good land stewardship practices.

With Carbon Harvest, you can adopt or help to sustain carbon farming and agroforestry practices that are best suited for your land, soils, climate, livelihood, and farm enterprise.

It’s time you were rewarded for your good stewardship of the land.

How to Start

Submit Your Application

Our Phase 1 Project application window is closed. For consideration in a future round of project funding, please sign up to receive notifications.

Design Phase

If selected, we will work with you to discuss your farm’s long- and short-term goals, and identify opportunities for agroforestry on your land that supports those goals. If you already have a robust land management plan, we will work with and add to what you have to meet you where you are, and add a carbon lens to your management goals.

Funding assistance

After design and planning, we will put together a funding plan that fits your situation, leveraging a combination of grants and public funding, sponsorships, and community support.

Establishment & Monitoring

Once funded, our team will work with you to coordinate the implementation of the plan, from site prep to sourcing of trees to planting. We will also work to develop ongoing monitoring.

FAQ

What does participation entail?

Once you apply, your farm or land will be considered for a carbon farming agroforestry project that is funded regionally based on its carbon offset potential (among other things). This means that you can receive assistance and incentive to steward your land and add income potential to your farm business. If selected, you will enter into a planning phase with Carbon Harvest. During this phase, we will together determine a best-fit carbon farming plan for your land. If you already have a PUV plan, conservation plan, or other carbon farm design, we can meet you where you are, adding a carbon lens to your existing farm design. If you don’t have any plans in place, that’s fine too! We can develop a carbon land plan that fits your holistic goals.

In addition to developing new income potential, this planning phase can help you address pain points on the land, especially climate change-related challenges like increased flooding, erosion, or other barriers.

Once plans and budgets have been developed, we will enter into an implementation phase where we seek investment to put the plans into action on your farm. Once implemented, the projects will be monitored to determine their progress.

How many projects will be selected for each Phase?

Project number and scale will depend on many factors. We will select 1 or more projects based on design budget, landowner and funder goals, and overall impact potential for the specific project phase. We will be in communication with applicants as we determine these details.

When will we know the Project Selections?

Phase 1 selections are projected to be finalized in August 2022. The current project phase is closed for applications. We will release requests for proposals for future phases, and interested farmers and landowners can sign up to receive notification here.

If I am selected, how long will the process take?

Once selected, the design/planning process takes roughly 40 hours. Once planning is complete, fundraising can move forward more directly, as many specific costs will be determined by the design plan. We expect that the funding timelines will vary from project to project depending on budget and scope. We will be able to identify a funding timeline more easily once the design plan is finalized, and early funding interest has been secured.

Will I have input on project design, implementation, and monitoring?

Yes. If your land is selected, Carbon Harvest will act as project manager between you and the funding and project implementation players that will bring the design plan to life. You will have input at all stages of the process. Part of this project phase involves innovation in carbon monitoring, with a focus on participatory systems.

What happens if I am not selected?

Applicants not selected for Phase 1 funding will be notified by Sept 1, 2022. Your application will be kept on file for future phases of Carbon Harvest, and we may reach out to you at a later date to determine your continued interest in participation unless you opt out of future funding phases.

Who can I contact if I still have questions?
